Compression Set

The ability of a particular material to return to its former shape after some deforming load.

This is particularly important for materials which rely on the compression set to carry out a particular function. For example, a Rubber seal must have good compression set to enable it to maintain its sealing qualities and respond to mechanical movement. Also, peristaltic Tubing must return to an open state after being fully occluded by the action of the peristaltic pump rollers.
